Black Lace is a spectacular breed in the Elderberry family. The intense dark purple foliage is reflective of some varieties of Japanese maple. Blooming in clusters of lemon-scented creamy-pink, contrasting the dark leaves, they grow taller and spread faster within a season. In fall, they bare black-red berries that are often harvested for making blackberry wine and jam. They attract birds and butterflies, feasting on them for weeks. These visually pleasing dark shrubs covered with lacy foliage, create a grand statement in your landscape. Flowers and cooked berries are said to have certain medicinal benefits. Used in mixed perennial borders, these woody shrubs create stunning hedges and screens and can be grown in planters with proper pruning practices to control their growth.
